Watchmaking

Modern Engineering for Mechanical Watches

Mechanical watchmaking has evolved far beyond traditional design methods. Today, numerical simulation, data analysis and software engineering have become essential tools in the development of high-performance mechanical movements. Python for Watchmaking bridges the gap between classical horology and modern engineering. Using practical Python examples, the book demonstrates how physical principles can be modelled, analysed and optimised with professional software tools. The book is available in English, German and French, making it accessible to readers throughout the international watchmaking industry.

Python for Watchmaking

The book covers a wide range of engineering topics, including: Python programming for engineering applications Mechanical watch theory Gear trains and escapements FFT analysis of timing variations Dynamic balancing Hertzian contact pressure Signal processing and data analysis Design of Experiments (DOE) Monte Carlo simulation Reliability and Weibull analysis Silicon balance springs Numerical optimisation Modern graphical user interfaces with PyQt Automatic report generation Engineering software architecture Whether you are learning Python or developing advanced watch movements, this book provides practical examples based on real engineering applications. Learn more about the Python book and E-Book editions.

Mechanical Watchmaking

The original Watchmaking book remains available and covers the fundamentals of traditional watchmaking, escapements, wheel trains and historical developments. Complete construction of a mechanical automatic movement Escapement selection and hairspring calculation Robust development workflows (Design for Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing) Material & technology innovations (e.g., silicon components, laser micro-processing) Chronometry & precision optimization techniques Gear-train design & Hertzian pressure analysis for high efficiency and long life Quality systems to meet modern 10-year warranty standards Case and construction elements using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes All editions are available in English, German and French. Learn more about the Watchmaking book.

Watchmaking Gear Simulator

The Watchmaking Gear Simulator is an open-source Python project accompanying the new book. It allows the analysis and optimi- sation of watch gear trains using real tooth profiles, contact simulation, efficiency calculations, Hertzian contact pressure and Monte Carlo tolerance analysis. The project is continuously developed and is available free of charge on GitHub. Visit the Watchmaking Gear Simulator on GitHub.

Chronometer measurement

For precision measurement, my chronometer-tracking app (available in the Apple App Store for iOS) enables accurate monitoring of mechanical time- pieces. The app evaluates chronometric performance according to official COSC standards, using METAS (Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology) time servers as a certified atomic-time NTP reference.

Support the Watchmaking Gear Simulator

The Watchmaking Gear Simulator is developed as an open-source project and is available free of charge for private, educational and commercial use. Developing professional engineering software requires a significant investment of time in research, implementation, testing and documentation. Every new release represents many hours of work devoted to improving the accuracy, reliability and usability of the software. If you or your company use the simulator professionally, please consider supporting its continued development through GitHub Sponsors. Your sponsorship helps fund: New engineering features Improved simulation algorithms Bug fixes and maintenance Documentation and tutorials Long-term availability of the project Whether you are an individual watchmaker, a student or part of a large watch manufacturer, your support helps ensure that this unique open-source project continues to grow. Thank you for supporting open-source watchmaking engineering.
